Hat ganz schön lange gedauert, bis diese schwelend dunkle klassische Stringnummer hier rausgekommen ist. Sehr dicht und harmonisch verliebt in die Weite rockt der Track in immer höhere Höhen und dürfte mit seinem massiven Sound ganz allein dastehen als eine der breitesten Hymnen des Sommers. Die smoother soulige Rückseite "Days Like This" zeigt, dass Simon V (zusammen mit Telmo A.) nicht nur in den Sounds sehr detroitig ist, sondern auch noch sehr gut mit Vocodern umgehen kann ohne dabei das rollende Flair zu verlieren Zwei Hits. 5 von 5 (bleed)

Groove - Juni/Juli 2003
Santorin starten nach ihrer erfolgreichen „Ambassadors“-Compilation wieder 12“-mäßig durch, wie immer nimmt In-House-Produzent Simon V die Zügel in die Hand. Mit „Icebreaker“ gelingt ihm ein Track, der ganz klar den Santorin-Sound definiert. Sehr episch, wie ein Star-Wars-Film als Track, ausgestattet wie ein Battlecruiser mit großen Atmosphären und viel Strings. „Days Like This“ ist noch eine Spur melodramatischer, mit schönen Vocoder-Sounds und einer sehr angenehmen Stimmung. Ziemlich entspannt rollt der Track dem Bassdrop entgegen. Er ist gemeinsam mit Telmo A. enstanden und hat sogar noch ein kleine Überraschung im zweiten Break parat. (MA)

Die neue Scheibe von Santorin ist endlich da! Während die B-Seite an sich schon ein erstklassiges Release wäre, wirbelt "Icebreaker" bereits seit Wochen einen wahren Wirbelwind im Internet auf. Da wurde schon gefragt, wer dieses epische Meisterwerk remixen sollte, bevor es überhaupt einen echten eigenen Release hatte! Simon V hat alles Bewährte in die Waagschale geworfen und so die vermutlich größte Hymne des Labels kreiert - ein von vorne bis hinten astreiner Track, unglaublich sauber produziert und in jeder Sekunde 100% treibend. Ich hatte bereits in der ouk das Vergnügen, die erste Werkschau des Tübinger Santorin-Labels, Ambassadors, zu besprechen. Schon in besagter Rezension konnte ich nicht anders, als Simon Vs Art der reduziert wirkenden, tiefen Produktionen über alle Maßen zu loben. "Icebreaker" steht dem in nichts nach, ohne nach Selbst-Plagiat zu klingen. Pentatonische Bläser, ein entsprechend dazu harmonischer Basslauf und schwere, hintergründig hallende Flächen ergeben die perfekte Mischung aus Clubtune und Soundtrack. Auf der Rückseite haben es Simon V und Telmo A. fertiggebracht, die wenigen guten Anteile, die man in Daft-Punk-Stücken findet (vorausgesetzt, man sucht lange genug) in den Drum´n´Bass-Kontext zu übersetzen. "Days Like This" lebt von zurückhaltenden Beats, die zeitweise in Halftime umschwenken und von kitschfreien Streichern, Vocodersounds und einer zaghaft drückenden Bassline umspült werden. Wieso um Himmels Willen machen mich diese Platten eigentlich immer so pathetisch? 5 von 5 (Feindsoul)

Zwei neue Vinyls aus dem eigenen Stall der Tübinger Drum&Bass-Schmiede. "Days Like This" ist für mich das musikalische Highlight: Pianos und coole Sounds wie aus einer Filmmusik für John Carpenter, melodisch, eigenständig und perfekt produziert, bloß eben kein Rave, sondern das ideale letzte Stück - und ein Muß für Sammler. Mit "Icebreaker" macht sich Simon für die, die den Witz noch nicht verstanden haben, zum zweiten mal nach "Pressure Alarm" über die Regeln für Abgehplatten lustig und wirft provozierend ungeniert grinsenderweise typische Sonic-Erfolgszutaten in den Mixkochpott, läßt dabei eher vergebens nach High Contrast suchen, würzt mit ein paar Simonsounds, um dann für den spielbarsten Leatherman-Tune seines noch recht jungen, drogenfreien Lebens auf breiter Ebene gefeiert zu werden, der ebenfalls auch ein echtes Hörerlebnis bleibt. Baden-Württemberg kann alles. Außer hochdeutsch. Was sie auch noch können, ist guten Drum & Bass made in Germany auf die Reise in die Clubs zu schicken. Simon V liebt es gewohnt episch und erzeugt mit sphärischen Klangflächen einen Cinemascope-Sound. Ungewöhnlich, aber gut. Die Flipside knüpft an dem Klangbild von "Icebreaker" an, wobei verstärkt electroide Sounds zum Einsatz kommen. Die Single macht einen sehr homogenen Eindruck und Simon V hat ganze Arbeit geleistet. "Icebreaker" ist ein solider, rollender Club Tune mit angetrancten, orchestralen Synth Stabs und elektroiden Bass Sounds. Vom Aufbau erinnert der Track ein wenig an High Contrast's "Return To Forever", wobei es sich aber keinesfalls um eine Kopie handelt. Gemeint ist die Atmosphäre des Tracks. Die Flip "Days Like This" wurde zusammen mit Telmo A. produziert und heraus kam ein deeper, souliger Stepper mit verspielten Vocoder-Sounds. Hätte ruhig eine Nummer druckvoller ausfallen dürfen. 4 von 6 (Ings)

Nice to see some new product from the always cinematic and ever consistent Simon V. On this new 12 he gets to knock one out in solo mode as well as another collaboration with Telmo A. “Icebreaker” starts off with a nice steppy beat and haunting keys before a theatrical build ushers in a grand horn section, which in turn give the track a real medieval feel. As always Simon’s production is spot on and well laid out. On the flip we have the two teaming up for “Days Like This” which is a little lighter in mood and feel. It starts with shuffly break and faint keys tinkering in the background before the drop. Some of the keyboard work executed in the second half of the track seem to be the boys paying respects to some of late 70’s/early 80’s German Electronic pioneers. They get the keys singing and fluttering along quite nicely. A track like this would fit in nicely with some of the UK’s electro revival derived d&b as well as deeper sets. Once again Santorin delivers. (ESB)

German wunderkind Simon V is back with another outstanding single on the equally excellent (and seriously underrated) Santorin imprint. 'Icebreaker' is some of Simon V's best work to date, as intensely epic, building synth work is brilliantly interwoven with crisp breakbeats and a deep driving bassline. Think 'Return of Forever' with an edge and you'll get an idea of this one. 'Days Like This' (with Telmo A) on the flip changes things up slightly, featuring a steppy break hook, pulsing bass, and an outstanding synth/effects build running the length of the tune. Another great moment for the talented young German, and definitely work checking for fans of quality drum and bass. 4 out of 5 (Vise)

"Icebreaker" marks the return of the true master of hymn-like drum'n'bass Simon V, who after the succesfull remix of Turntablerocker's latest single, gets down to some pure d'n'b business. This is one of those huge tunes that carry a heavy dose of importance evident on the first listen. Everything is in place - running beats, filtered atmospherics and the dark vocal announcing the track. Simon's excellent production skills shine throughout the song brining it to a breakdown only to get the crowd ready for another storm. "Icebreaker" is backed by a colaboration with Telmo A. called "Days Like This". It is probably the most intriguing piece of atmospheric drum'n'bass in years. The song drives passionately through soundscapes and rolling synth phrasing, making room for new elements along the way. Vocoded accents add to the overall complexity of the track, surprisingly getting into a hip-hop feel in the middle, after which it goes on to another cycle of this exquisite atmospheric journey. Another quality release from the Santorin camp, who’ve been mysteriously silent since they released their excellent Ambassadors – The Santorin Drum & Bass Anthology compilation last year. The press release includes the good news that both of the tracks featured here will be available on a new volume of Ambassadors, to be released early next year. If the rest of the tracks on Ambassadors 2 will be anything like “Icebreaker” and “Days Like This” we have something to look forward to. It is hard to describe a track like “Icebreaker” – deep bass, magnificent strings, heroic horns, and tight rolling beats. Bares all the elements of a true classic and could be one of this years biggest d&b tracks, if the established DJs would give it the chance it deserve (it went on Dogs on Acid top 10 dubplate list which is voted by it’s readers). Teaming up with Telmo A. on the B-side for “Treasure Island” which is equally deep and includes an interesting blend of strings, vocoder sounds and many layers of drumrolls. Wie der Name schon sagt, bricht der Track das Eis. Schöne Sphären begleiten den typisch runden Simon V Groove. Ein Leckerbissen der natürlich aus dem deutschen Hause Santorin stammt, welches jetzt seine neue Platte veröffentlicht und die nächste bereits in den Startlöchern steht. Lightwood-ék Stuttgart mellol osztanak, Simon V is nehezen nyúl mellé darabjaival. Az Icebreaker ráült a DJ chartokra, mivel amolyan Sonic-féle emelkedo vonalú epikus, space-disco drum and bass. Egyáltalán nem rossz kópia, de a túloldal jobban bejött. Ha az A oldal viszi a terméket, a B oldal miért ne kísérletezzen kicsit? A Days like this melankolikusan visszafogott, de egy éles dobszekció kattog a klasszikus vonósok alatt. Néha egy elhaló kiáltás és a fejünket kontrol alá helyezo hangfoszlányok elozik meg a vocoderes duruzsoló fotémát. Kellemes, lágy elbuvölo, mindez német ízzel. Félidoben kapunk még egy tempófelezést is. Szeretjük a napokat, amelyek ilyenek. (c0p)
